Agate Housing + Services

Agate Housing and Services assists individuals and families experiencing homelessness and housing instability in our community. Christ the King partners with Agate through a variety of hands-on service projects.

Bedroll Ministry

Volunteers create sleeping mats using plarn (plastic yarn made from recycled grocery bags). These mats provide insulation and cushioning for individuals who must sleep outdoors.

How can you help?

• Donate clean plastic grocery bags
  
• Prepare plarn for crocheting
• Crochet and knit plarn into bedrolls

Did you know? It takes about 750 bags to make one bedroll mat.

Ascension Catholic Church

Through our long-standing relationship with Ascension Catholic Church in North Minneapolis, Christ the King shares Christ's love through supporting their food shelf and seasonal outreach initiatives.

Monthly Food Drive (First weekend of each month)

On the first weekend of each month, parishioners bring nonperishable food items to Mass. Donations support Ascension's food ministry and help provide groceries to families in the Hawthorne neighborhood and surrounding communities.

Food Drive dates:

• Aug. 1-2
• Sept. 12-13
• Oct. 3-4
• Nov. 7-8
• Dec. 5-6

Food Drive Friday (Prep Day)

Volunteers gather for rosary, Mass, then prepare donations from the Food Drive weekend so food and household essentials from our parish are ready for Ascension's outreach programs.

Most needed items are:

• Canned chicken or tuna
• Canned peaches, pears, or pineapple
• Canned refried beans
• Dry cereal
• Instant coffee
• Toilet paper, paper towels, and kleenex
• Diapers and wipes
• Toothpaste and toothbrushes

How to donate:

• Bring these items to Mass on the Food Drive dates
• Use the link below to give directly to Ascension online
• Place an envelope marked FOOD DRIVE on the table in the Gathering Space. Write Food Drive in the memo line of your check.
  

Ascension Catholic Church: Seasonal Outreach Projects

Throughout the year, Christ the King supports our neighbors in need through special collections and service projects.

Adopt-a-Student: July 18 - Aug. 30

Help provide backpacks and school supplies for students at Ascension preparing for the new school year.

• Purchase prepackaged school supplies by ordering online
• Pick up a shopping list from the Gathering Space

Thanksgiving Baskets: Oct. 25 - Nov. 15

Provide a complete Thanksgiving meal for a family through Ascension's annual holiday outreach.

Warm Clothing Drive: Jan. 10 - 24

Donate new or gently used winter clothing including coats, hats, gloves, scarves, socks, and other cold-weather essentials distributed through community partners including Agate, Ascension, and Incarnation.

Easter Baskets: Mar. 6 - 21

Help provide Easter baskets for children and families served through Ascension.

Loaves and Fishes

Loaves & Fishes is a metro-wide organization dedicated to providing nutritious meals and hospitality to people experiencing hunger.

Christ the King volunteers help prepare, serve, and share meals throughout the year, serving hundreds of guests through this ministry.

Serving Together: Parish & School

We value opportunities for parishioners and Carondelet Catholic School students to serve side by side. These experiences help build relationships across generations while connecting faith, service, and community.

Cards of Encouragement

3rd grade students help prepare food bags for the monthly food drive for Ascension and include encouragement cards for recipients.

Snack Packs

Parishioners and families collaborated on collecting items and then volunteers assemble snack packs with the 4th Grade students to provide quick nourishment for individuals accessing Agate services.

Good Deed Blankets

During Advent and Lent, volunteers and 5th Grade students create fleece blankets that are distributed through community partners including Agate, Ascension, and Incarnation.

Service Days (Fall & Spring)

During fall and spring service days, middle school (grades 6-8) students and parish volunteers work together on projects that benefit both our parish community and local service organizations.

Projects may include:

• Preparing food donations
• Making blankets and bedroll mats
• Writing cards for homebound parishioners
• Preparing meals for shelters
• Visiting senior living communities
• Campus beautification projects
• Baking and care package projects
• Seasonal outreach preparation
  

Get Involved

Serving others is one way we respond to God's love and put our faith into practice. Outreach ministries provide opportunities to accompany those in need, build relationships, and strengthen our community through acts of mercy and service.
