Holy Days of Obligation

In the Catholic Church, Holy Days of Obligation are special feast days when, like Sundays, Catholics are asked to participate in Mass. These days highlight important moments in the life of Jesus Christ, honor the Blessed Virgin Mary, and celebrate the saints.

In the United States, several Holy Days of Obligation are observed each year. Below are the ones typically celebrated in our region, along with Mass times at our parish.

Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God (January 1)

We honor Mary as the mother of Jesus, who is truly God and truly human.

Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, January 1, at 8 a.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle.

Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (August 15)

We celebrate Mary being taken body and soul into heaven at the end of her life.

Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, August 15, at 4:30 p.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle.

  • Note: In the United States, when this feast falls on a Saturday or Monday, the obligation to attend Mass is lifted, though Mass is still celebrated and all are welcome. (canon 1246 §2)

Solemnity of All Saints (November 1)

We celebrate all saints, known and unknown, who are with God in heaven.

Mass will be celebrated on Sunday, November 1

  • 9 a.m. at Christ the King
  • 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle.

Note: This Catholic Spirit article oulines Vatican guidance for a Holy Day of Obligation that falls on a Sunday.

Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls' Day)

We pray for those who have died, especially our loved ones.

Mass will be celebrated on Monday, November 2?

Note: This day is not a Holy Day of Obligation, but it is a special opportunity to pray for loved ones who have died.

Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception (December 8)

We celebrate that Mary was conceived without original sin, prepared to be Jesus’ mother.

Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, December 8, at 8 a.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle.

Solemnity of the Nativity of Our Lord – Christmas (December 25)

We celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, God made human for us.

  • Christmas Eve: Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, December 24, at 4:30 p.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle.
  • Christmas Day: Mass will be celebrated on Friday, December 25
  • 9 a.m. at Christ the King
  • 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle.
